night with italian luthiers

15 Apr 2011 - Met with Luthiers Mr Paolo Vettori and his sons, Dario II and Lapo at a recent exhibition. Great experience to be able to try Paolo's masterpieces (each violin cost about $30-40k).

Part of our interesting conversations:

Me: (Mr Paolo) Why do you like to make violin?
Paolo: Cus my dad makes violin (3rd generations of violin making). Other than that, making violin makes me feel free and wanting to make more and better violin.

Me: How long does it usually takes to finish 1 violin?
Paolo: at least a year. finding the right wood, cutting, over 40 vanish coatings, drying...

Paolo: Which violin do you like most?
Me: Hm. (looking at the 4 violins) This i think. Very rich in tone. How about you? Which one do you like the most since you made it.
Paolo: This (the same one). For me I don't see it as much as an instrument. It's more of a Sculptural piece.

Organiser: Sorry to interrupt. Paolo, there's a buyer for this violin.
